Angola crowns Miss Landmine

I was looking through one of my favorite blogs, Foreign Policy Passport which allows me a sneak peek at the very expensive magazine. Today they highlighted the Miss Landmine Contest in Angola. Even though I work in international development it's always striking to me how blessed I am. Three to four hundred people are maimed each year by landmines in Angola and there are 80,000 Angolan amputees, most of whose injuries were due to landmines. You can check out the contests profiles here: http://www.miss-landmine.org/misslandmine_candidates.html. Almost all of them are unemployed and single with children. The winner received $2500 and a custom made artificial limb.
